Remote Camera Live Viewing in Employee Monitoring
Remote camera live view lets an administrator watch the camera feed of a company computer in real time from the WorkAuditor web console. Used the right way, it answers one question quickly: what is happening at that machine right now. Used the wrong way, it becomes an invasion of privacy that damages trust and can create legal exposure. This guide explains what the feature does, where remote camera live viewing makes sense in employee monitoring, and how to keep it defensible.
What remote camera live view is
Remote camera live view is exactly what the name says: a live, real-time view of the camera attached to a monitored computer, shown in the administrator console. WorkAuditor already offers live desktop viewing, which shows the screen. The camera view shows the other side of the machine - the physical area in front of it - so a supervisor can see, for example, whether anyone is actually sitting at a remote workstation.
Two details matter for monitoring policy. First, the camera view is an administrator feature: it is not recording continuously in the background, and it is not something employees can switch on for themselves. Second, live camera viewing is about the present moment - unlike MP4 camera and microphone recording, it does not by itself produce a saved video file for later review.
When live camera viewing makes sense at work
Live camera viewing is most defensible where the camera is part of the workplace itself, not pointed at a person's private space:
- Verifying that an unattended workstation, warehouse aisle, or storage area is undisturbed.
- Confirming that a remote employee is present during a scheduled meeting or support session, when they have agreed to it.
- Checking company equipment in areas with no reasonable expectation of privacy, such as server rooms or loading docks.
The common thread: the more the camera watches equipment and locations rather than individuals in private moments, the fewer problems you create. If your only use case is "watch people to catch them doing something wrong," rethink the policy before you deploy the feature.
Privacy boundaries that must stay intact
Employers should not use remote camera live viewing to watch employees in restrooms, locker rooms, break rooms, or any area where employees reasonably expect privacy. The same applies to personal machines: if you allow BYOD, the employee's own laptop camera is not yours to watch without clear, written agreement and a legitimate business reason.
Several countries and US states have specific laws about video monitoring in the workplace, and some require notice or consent before cameras that capture people are used. Employee monitoring with cameras also sits under general data protection rules such as the GDPR in Europe. When in doubt, have your employment counsel review the plan before you go live - camera monitoring is one of the highest-risk monitoring features you can deploy.
What your monitoring policy should state
If you enable remote camera live viewing, write it down before you use it. A defensible policy covers at least:
- Which cameras can be viewed and by whom (for example, managers and IT administrators only).
- When viewing is permitted - such as scheduled checks or incident response - and that viewing is limited to what is needed.
- How employees are told about the feature: handbook, signed acknowledgment, or both, depending on your jurisdiction.
- That the camera view is an administrator feature and is not used for continuous personal surveillance.
Transparency is not just a legal defense; it is also the difference between monitoring that employees tolerate and monitoring they resent. Our guide on transparent monitoring covers how to communicate these rules honestly, and an ethics framework for employee monitoring programs helps you place camera features inside a defensible program instead of bolting them on.
The rule of thumb
Ask one question before every camera view: would I be comfortable explaining this exact use to the employee, to a works council, or to a court? If the answer is no, the view probably should not happen. Remote camera live view is a legitimate tool for protecting company equipment and supporting remote operations - not a substitute for trust.
