Set core hours — say 10:00 to 15:00 — when every employee must be reachable, and let the rest of the day flex around it. Automatic attendance then means: logged in during core hours, active within the day's work window, exceptions surfaced.

The rule I give clients: don't apply a physical-office definition of attendance to remote workers. "At a desk by nine" is meaningless for a distributed team; "working within agreed hours, reachable in core windows" is enforceable and fair.

Rolling It Out Without the Uproar

Attendance automation touches everyone, so rollout is a transparency exercise. Announce what replaces what: the spreadsheet stops, the badge stays or goes, and here's what the log will show. Run a two-week parallel period — old system and new together — so employees see their automatic record matching their manual one before the manual one disappears. Publish the exception process: who approves late arrivals, how to fix a bad log, what happens when the laptop dies at 8:55. The systems that fail are the ones employees discover they can't appeal.
