Employee Monitoring Software for Small Business
Most monitoring products are built for companies with a security team. WorkAuditor is built for the other case: five to five hundred computers, one person setting it up, and no server room.
What small teams actually need to see
In practice, small businesses deploy monitoring for one of three reasons. Pick one to start:
- Attendance you can prove. Who was at work, from which machine, on which network. WorkAuditor records check-in and check-out from the computer and attaches the Wi-Fi hotspot, IP address and an optional webcam photo to each punch.
- Where the time went. Application and website usage per team, without turning into a surveillance program.
- Who took what. File operations, USB copies, print jobs and email attachments — the records you need if client data walks out the door.
What it costs, and what per-PC pricing avoids
WorkAuditor is priced per computer, not per user per month with a rising minimum. Starter pricing is $24.95 per computer per month or $99.95 per computer per year. A ten-computer office is therefore about $83 a month annually-billed, and there is no separate server licence for cloud deployment.

Setup that fits an afternoon
- Write a one-page monitoring notice and get an acknowledgment. This takes longer than the install, and it is the part that protects you.
- Start the free trial, install the agent on five to ten machines in one department.
- Set recording to stop outside working hours, or to run only between check-in and check-out.
- Give managers a narrow view — team reports, not company-wide screenshots.
- Review after two weeks and turn off anything you cannot justify.
The step-by-step version is in Set Up Remote Employee Monitoring in Under 30 Minutes, and the technical install steps are in the Windows guide.
Features that matter at this size
- Screenshots and screen recording at configurable intervals
- Application and website usage, plus website and app blocking
- File operations, USB storage, print jobs and clipboard activity
- Live desktop view and remote control
- Offline recording — laptops keep recording without a connection and upload later
- Windows and macOS agents, plus Terminal Server, Citrix and VMware support
- Cloud console, so nothing needs to be installed on a server
What to be careful about
Monitoring is only defensible when it is disclosed and scoped. Keystroke logging in WorkAuditor records counts, not the text typed, and message content is not captured. If you need to understand the notice requirements in your state, read Do You Have to Tell Employees They Are Being Monitored?.
